Marinette Dupain-Cheng, a socially anxious teenager, goes to school and tries not to be noticed. Despite forming a friendship with another student, Alya Césaire, Marinette finds herself desperately trying to avoid the wrath of rich girl Chloé Bourgeois. While trying to escape, Marinette encounters and falls in love with model Adrien Agreste. Adrien has become incredibly emotionally distant from others due to the death of his mother, Emilia. Similarly devastated by her death, Adrien’s father, Gabriel, uses the Butterfly Miraculous, a magical gem, to transform into Hawk Moth in order to find the Miraculous he needs to make a wish and bring his wife back to life.

Hawk Moth’s appearance is sensed by Wang Fu, the guardian of the Miraculous Box, who decides to release Ladybug and Cat Miraculous only for them to escape. He is saved from an oncoming bus by Marinette, who is still running from Chloé while realizing that she deserves Miraculous. Marinette sneaks into a corner store in an alley and is found by Tikki, the Kwami of Creation, while her polar opposite, Plagg, the Kwami of Destruction, makes her way to Adrien.

The two become Ladybug and Cat Noir and eventually run into each other, working together to defeat Gargoyle, an “akumatized” villain created by Hawk Moth from negative emotions. After the fight, Wang Fu follows them and emphasizes the importance of them sticking together.

Marinette initially refuses to continue being Ladybug, but Hawk Moth recruits other villains and they wreak havoc at the carnival. Gathering the courage to fight, Marinette transforms again and defeats them along with Cat Noir.

Months pass and Marinette plans to confess her feelings to Adrien while Adrien plans to confess to Ladybug. Not a single confession will go well without knowing their true identity. Defeated, Hawk Moth akumatizes and unleashes the apocalypse on Paris, prompting Ladybug and Cat Noir to spring into action. The heroes are stunned and Ladybug’s earrings are taken from her, but Marinette is able to make a brief push and help push Cat Noir away from Hawk Moth. When Cat Noir’s mask is damaged, Hawk Moth discovers that Adrien is Cat Noir, gives up his miraculous powers, and collapses. Adrien forgives his father while Marinette recovers her earrings and returns the Butterfly Miraculous to Wang Fu before repairing the damage done to Paris with her powers. Gabriel may be arrested while Marinette returns to her family.

The day of the Winter Ball arrives and Marinette arrives in a beautiful dress much to the delight of the crowd. She finds Adrien, reveals that she knows his identity as she saw his reconciliation during the fight, and reveals her identity as well. Then they kiss each other.

Later, Nathalie Sancoeur, the Agrests’ assistant, goes to the cellar under their house. In the basement is the body of Adrien’s mother, who is wearing the Peacock Miraculous.
